National Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated from September 15th to October 15th. We celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month to recognize the dedication, contributions, and achievements of Hispanic American figures who have inspired others to be successful. We recognize the histories and cultures of American citizens whose ancestors came from Central and South America, Spain, Mexico, and the Caribbean.
In 1968, President Lyndon Johnson signed into law legislation recognizing Hispanic Heritage week. President Ronald Regan expanded the commemorative week to a one month celebration in 1988. Hispanic Heritage Month covers a 30 – day period starting on September 15th and ending on October 15th.
September 15th is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries including El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Costa Rica, and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico’s Independence Day is September 16th and Chile’s Independence Day is September 18th. Also, Columbus Day or Día de la Raza, is October 12th. All of these days of commemoration fall within the 30-day period of September 15th to October 15th.
