Wong Fleming Celebrates Asian Pacific American Heritage Month
In the United States, Asian Pacific American Heritage Month is celebrated annually in May. May was chosen to celebrate the first Japanese immigrants to the United States. In June, 1977, Frank Horton and Norman Y. Mineta, introduced a bill to proclaim the first 10 days of May as Asian Pacific Heritage Week. A month later, a similar bill was introduced in the Senate by former U.S. Senators Spark Matsunaga and Daniel Inouye. In October 1978, President Jimmy Carter signed the law to make the celebration of Asian/Pacific American Heritage a week. In 1990, George H.W. Bush, extended this celebration into a month.
Throughout the month of May, all Americans have the opportunity to recognize and celebrate the achievements, accomplishments and contributions of Asian and Pacific Americans with activities, festivals, and events for the community.
Wong Fleming has long history of celebrating and highlighting our cultural differences. We learn from those differences that make us unique and diverse. We are proud to have Partners Linda Wong and Florelee Lyles who have served as presidents of the New Jersey chapter for the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (NAPABA). In addition, Partner, Linda Wong was honored to receive NAPABA’s Prestigious Trailblazer Award.
Wong Fleming also recognizes and condemns the unprovoked anti-Asian violence experienced by the Asian Pacific American community. Our attorneys will continue to support efforts to eradicate this and all other types of racial injustice.
Asian Pacific American history will be shown in monumental museums like the Library of Congress, United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, National Archives and Records Administration, National Gallery of Art, National Park Service, National Endowment for the Humanities, and Smithsonian Institution to honor Asian Pacific Islanders who have made an impact on Asian Pacific American history.
